Architecture for Dogs

Wes Anderson’s latest movie Isle of Dogs premiered earlier this month, and I’m still keeled over from the amazingness of it all. If you have any interest in a film full of top notch aesthetics, design and typography (and everything else), this one is a must watch. (Interest in dogs not required.)

So with the credits still rolling in my head, I think this design project was a timely discovery. Architecture for Dogs is a collective of innovative objects and structures for canine companions, each created by a different designer. I’d like to think this was the result of those word association exercises we are always encouraged to do as designers and creative thinkers.

The first series showcases thirteen inventions, and each one is as unique as its inventor. (A dog trampoline made from an old tshirt — does it get any cooler?) What I love is that these playful designs prompt thoughtful questions such as, What if dogs appreciated aesthetics? Or what if we modelled dog habitats after our own? Could they change dog behaviour? Could spaces change our relationship with our pets?

I also love that each design’s blueprint is available as a free download, so you can make one for yourself your dog! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if amazing design like this was more readily available to everyone?

This brilliant concept was created by Kenya Hara, creative director of Muji, who also curates the collection. I think it’s really interesting how Hara believes that:

“Reexamining these close partners with fresh eyes may be a chance to reexamine both human beings themselves and the natural environment.”

Which poses another question: How might we draw inspiration from the animals around us to inform the design of our own spaces and lifestyles?
