A World of Water

Lately the notion of maps really fascinates me. At once narrative, informative, and emotive, they traverse all manner of space and time, embodying both the real and imagined. While devouring this amazing collection of contemporary map designs, I discovered Michael Pecirno’s Minimal Maps, a series of interactive maps exploring different environmental elements of America. In Pecirno’s words,

Minimal Maps is an ongoing research project that explores how single subject maps can tell new stories about the Earth’s landscapes.

My favorite is Water. The map in its entirety is beautiful, but the details are simply stunning. Bodies of fresh water swirl and scatter to form a complex world of their own. It’s exactly like poetry. And I think poetry is a wonderfully powerful way to show us that water is truly beautiful, precious and vulnerable.
